Outside In

The sun came out! We’re so so lucky to have a garden. Mr Robin who made an appearance a few weeks ago is still around. He likes it after I’ve swept. There are a few blue tits making a home in next doors apple tree too. I don’t mind at all – But I’m pretty sure they are going to mind the cat that likes to sunbathe in the same tree occasionally.

Our new chairs we ordered a while ago finally arrived as obviously they wen’t any kind of important/priority. As soon as I hit publish on this post I’m going outside to sit on one.

The first Monday of lockdown was the week we’d planned to go to the garden centre unfortunately. But we had some seeds left so our starts are currently way behind on the windowsill in the kitchen. Apparently the garden centre starts home delivery from Tuesday so we’ll put in an order.

The dead thing in between the back of the wooden chair was our pink lemonade blueberry bush. We do a lot of crops in pots as our garden is 90% paved. Unfortunately all our berry fruit bushes did not come back to life after the winter and have either died or are in the process of doing so. Not sure what all thats about tbh. 3 years down the drain and only the taste of a handful of fruit to remember them by.

Craving Canon – Essay

I put out a long essay yesterday that I’d spent the week writing in-between spreadsheet and notion work. It’s a 5000 word long post on canon, fandom, solarpunk, narrative, cultural fracking and other problems with story worlds in 2020.
I’ve had some great discussions about it already with folks. Looking forward to seeing some of that show up in the isles of V/B-logging soon.

Lockdown Week 4

Also this week continuing with ‘Do all the things’ I fixed our coffee maker this week. Early on Sunday morning I was greeted in the kitchen by the sounds of an angry coffee machine trying to boil dry on its timer, and a flood of biblical proportions all over the counter top.

I had it apart in quick order tho. It was a little annoying as 2 of the screws were stupid U-shaped Groove Fork ones. Luckily I have a set that can tackle most types of security screws. It did the job with a little help from an elastic band. On entry I was a little scared by the size of the capacitors on the PCB but diffused them with my multimeter and stayed well away.

In retrospect, I should have take more photos than just this one, as there isn’t a guide on how to take our model of machine apart anywhere on the internet. If it happens again, I’ll do a step by step and post it here.

I also watched Andrew Dana Hudson pass his Masters thesis on a zoom call this week. He did a great job! Congratulations!

Haven’t this obsessed with a subject for a while. But it’s been bubbling along. A friend DM’d me an observation after I hit published and I was like OH MY I have more to say. I suppose the essay does pick up on two podcasts I made last year and this one references two others as well.

Anyway. there might be more canon content incoming as Dialogue begins with other folks.

Reading

I’m still reading Pagans: The End of Traditional Religion and the Rise of Christianity by James J. O’Donnell. It’s ok. Hard to believe it’s on university reading lists tbh. The whole book seems to gloss over Roman ancestor worship and death masks etc which is pretty fundamental to understanding religion and spirituality in the ancient world. Instead focusing on capital G Gods. There is however some great moments where O’Donnell brings ancient rites and rituals to life.

Music

I mentioned Clap! Clap! back in my top albums of 2017.

March saw the release of Southern Dub. The first release in 2 years from jazz artist Cristiano Crisci. It’s a great track and has some real dub vibes. I like how it glides from the swung beat into a straight beat about 2.5 mins in.
