It was Eves Birthday so we went away for 3 nights so she could recharge somewhere warm. We had joked about going to Malaga and the sort of reputation it has, but Katie Price and her entourage was literally on our flight out …. so there you go.

Flying in over the Spanish country side gave me a real sense for “Don Quixote Country’.

We did a bunch of touristy things. Went to the Roman Amphitheater, and spent a great morning walking up the hill to the Alcazaba. The palatial Moorish fortification was built by the Hammudid dynasty in the early 11th century. It was cool to read about the Siege, and the Moorish influence on the region. Also it was surprising to learn that the only other fortification like it still standing in the world is the castle of Krak des Chevaliers in Syria.

The main thing to report is: MIMO Vegan Bistro.

I’ve been lucky enough to have eaten in a bunch of fancy stared restaurants all around the world. But honestly, the food at Mimo, was one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten. It was founded by a Polish family in 2019. The menu is completely seasonal and all the ingredients served are all from local organic farms around Malaga. They also serve cocktails. It was amazing.

Honestly, Mimo is place thats worth going to Malaga for an away break, just to go to the restaurant. It’ll be in a food guide soon for sure.

We stayed in a fairly cheap place about 10mins walk from the old town. The hotel had very ‘business’ vibes. But it had a pool a steamroom and sauna which was cool. Malaga was a great place. The old town is a really nice to visit in the off season. Orange trees growing everywhere and cool bits of pubic art. Though I can’t imagine what it’s like at peak summer… Essex on med maybe.

We also went to the Picasso museum. It was really well curated and the audio tour did a really good job taking the viewer though Pacasso’s entire career across two gallery spaces. I really enjoyed the couple of hours we spent there. It was cool to see Picasso’s Musketeer series in person. We weren’t supposed to take photos at all. But I couldn’t resist snapping this photo of The Faun from his later life ceramics series. Like Doshin the giant or something. So cheery!

Reading

Agency Book Cover

I read Agency whilst I was away. Did the whole book in one day. Started at the Hotel in Spain waiting for a cab and finished far to late into the night in bed that evening.

Its Ok. It suffers some what from ‘Middle book syndrome’ in a trilogy which as PGR pointed out in the dark forest is fairly common for Gibson books.

There’s some real cringe moments in it. Mainly arising from the alt-reality of Hilary winning the election. It’s the worst part of the fantasy.

ADH also mentioned regarding Agency that “he probably wanted to write a 4th Blue Ant style book about a tactical-styled Her AI. Then Trump happened and he correctly realized that the world was swinging wildly away from that lo-fi spook country stuff he’d pioneered. so he had to make it a stub to get back into that zone.” I don’t think thats far away from the truth.

I’m reading the second Ringworld book right now, I’m not sure if I should have. Maybe if I’d waited a decade for the follow up like the real world did it would be better than I’m finding it right now.

Music

I listened to a bunch of recent French electro pop on the plane. If you liked Yelle about 15 years ago, you might like Dopamoon.
