The Funeral

Last year I wrote about what was going to happen when the Queen died. I still stand by my prediction.

The 12 days of state mandated mourning has been difficult to describe to people outside of the UK. Amidst the biggest crisis since the second world war, the country was put on pause. Here are some things that happened:

Protesters were arrested. The establishment reacted with apoplexy that any republican could even exist. The longest queue in recorded history formed along the Thames to see the Queen’s coffin lying in state. The Speaker of the House of commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle said live on TV that: The Queen’s Funeral was “The most important event the world will ever see”. The public were asked not to leave marmalade sandwiches in the memorial garden.

The more you believe in the institution of the Crown the more real the Queen becomes.

For 72 years, generations of the Queen’s subjects have sung to God to save her and crush the rebellious Scots. They sang it in the boarding schools our media elite attended. Before football matches, before wars. But that anthem now has new words. God save the King we sing, making real the new inhabitant of the ‘non-statutory corporation sole’. King Charles the III. 

The Queen was, at the end of the day, just a human being. Like you or I.

Yet at the moment of her accession to the throne through the glamour of arcane ritual, and capital P power, she embodied the materiality of a declining Empire. The State made flesh.

This is why I went to the Funeral.

Why I went to experience it. I wanted to see the state, with all its power, ritualised and actualised with my own eyes. 

10 mins to sunrise I got the train into town.

Meeting friends before walking the length of the route to find a spot to watch the proceedings. That walk set the tone for the day.

I have never felt more like a prole than when I first encountered the wall of steel raised around the Funeral route.

I’ve seen big temporary barriers erected during protests in London before. But these giant green metal walls were far more permanent and imposing. Guarded by stony faced coppers stood stock still.

These walls were another manifestation of the state. One that had said: No. No you cannot see or go beyond this point. Yes, things are happening over there, but you prole, are to stay over here. 

About 8.30am after an hour’s walk though London we found a spot in Knightsbridge. Right at the front. By the barriers, opposite the Oriental Hotel along South Carriage drive. 

Every 100 metres along the road stood a copper. None of them in the high viz that I’ve come to expect from the modern constabulary. Instead, they were dressed in crisp white shirts, body armour and helmets. Dressed more or less the same at the funeral as they would have done at the coronation. I wondered if there was some sort of aesthetic symmetry in play. 

With no big screens to follow the proceedings, we followed events on our phones. Second hand audio of the BBC’s coverage was blasted out by distorted loud speakers overlapped by sound from smartphones. With the phone network creaking, each device suffered different amounts of latency. A moment of high techno-strange-ness occurred as live streamed audio bleed well into the beginning of the two minutes silence.

Our 5 hour wait fuelled by thermos coffee and packed sandwiches wore on. The crowd behind grew, and hotel staff and guests trickled out onto balconies. Eventually as packed as we were down on the roadside.

We heard it before we saw it. From Wellington Arch, a ripple of cheers and clapping swelled along the crowd. The moment came and 1000’s of cameras went up, including mine. Flowers launched over our head into the road, and I got to see what I came to see.

A wand, an orb and a crown, placed upon the coffin of a dead monarch. 

All the powers of the state. All its glamour, its violence, its cruelty, its history. Reduced. Compressed into physical objects. 

For 5 or so seconds the artefacts representing not only the second Elizabethan age. But the end of an Empire, the invention of the United Kingdom, and the era of the post war settlement speed past. The moment in time, and a period of history.

I saw a hearse leaving a city, and a country in decline for a literal castle in Berkshire.

For 12 days, the day to day running of the country had been put on hold. Since the great un-pausing, our new prime minister, Liz Truss, the last of the neoliberals, has made moves. Markets have slid, the pound has fallen. The reality of a red white and blue Brexit and post pandemic Britain, all hitting home. 

Last year I said the interregnum would be a period of deranged manufactured consent and statue discourse. Keep calm, and carry on amidst rising ​​fascism, supply chain crisis, empty shelves, channel drownings, rivers of shite, and rapid inflation.

In the event, I underestimated the scale of the crisis. In the coming months the British State, and the State of Britain, entwined closer than at any time in the last half century will begin to unspool. War, blackouts, earthquakes and the collapse of the NHS are all in store. 

The 21 century has finally arrived in Britain with the passing of a crown.

Theatre’s Royal

Have you ever wondered why so many towns and cities in Britain have a building called the Theatre Royal?
I have.

The short answer is: Censorship

The longer answer is far too involved for a 5 min podcast. But I’ll link liberally in the show notes if you want to flesh out the weft to my warp – speed explanation.

First lets talk Shakespeare and context. His work was the beginning of the period that we now call the ‘English Renaissance Theatre’. Which begins in 1558, the year of his first play and the year Queen Elizabeth the 1st ascended to the throne. Think for a moment, about the period in history that immediately preceded it. King Henry the 8th, the reformation, the Edwardian reforms, the first book of common prayer, the iconoclasms, the Restoration of Queen Mary, riots and the rise of the witch hunt. Crazy times.

The period of English renaissance theatre covers the whole of Shakespeare’s working life. And continues into the Jacobean dramatist era. The years 1558 though 1642. 

What happened in 1642 you ask? Well..the English Civil War. At the wars outbreak the long parliament as it was known ordered the closure of Londons theatres. The order cited the current “times of humiliation” and their incompatibility with “public stage-plays”. Which the parliament said was representative of “lascivious Mirth and Levity”.

You can smell the puritanical language from 400 years away. You have to remember the context. This was all happening 100 years after the start of the reformation. Anything that felt vaguely catholic was sus. Especially mirth and levity. god forbid. The puritans of course thought people should be doing more pray and less play as it were. 

The civil war was of course between the Parliamentarians and Royalists. Not necessarily Catholics and Protestants, it was more complicated than that. There was a lot going on in the mix.

One anonymous royalist pamphlet against the closure of the theatres at the time wrote sarcastically: 

“ … we need not any more Stage-playes; we thanke them for surpressing them, they save us money”

So from 1642 theatres and fun where banned in England. Of course prohibition never works. So the ban was reinforced and strengthened in 1648 at the beginning of the Second Civil War. Actors were to be treated as rogues. Parliament authorised the demolition of theatre seating and levied fines on spectators.

Actors of the day fought back issuing, again an anonymous pamphlet called:

The Actors Remonstrance or Complaint, for the silencing of their Profession, and banishment from their several PLAY-HOUSES.

It’s one hell of a document. The first paragraph reads:

Oppressed with many calamities, and languishing to death under the bur∣then of a long and (for ought wee know) an everlasting restraint, we the Comedians, Tragedians and Actors of all sorts and sizes be∣longing to the famous private and publike Houses within the City of London and the Suburbs thereof, to you great Phoebus, and you sacred Sisters, the sole Patronesses of our distressed Calling, doe we in all humility present this our humble and lamentable complaint, by whose interces∣sion to those powers who confined us to silence, wee hope to be restored to our pristine honour and imployment.

So much going on there, invocations to Apollo and the muses. Anyways where was I.. Ah yes Theatre Royal. After the restoration of Charles II in 1660 a full 18 years after the theatres were closed, the king issued letters patent to two men called Thomas Killigrew and William Davenant. Granting them the monopoly right to form two theatre companies in London to perform quote un quote “serious” or “spoken” Drama.

This serious drama, licensed by the King eventually became known as Patent Theatre after the Licensing Act of 1737. Essentially breaking the English theatrical tradition into two forms. Legitimate theatre: IE the performance of plays or drama with serious or moral content. And Illegitimate theatre, which required directors to intersperse performances with singing or dancing. Lest the performance get too serious. So comedy, pantomime, opera, dance, music hall or melodrama were fine, but illegitimate. 

Eventually the monopoly on legitimate theatre was relaxed and new patents issued to theatres across the country. Giving them the right to perform legitimate theatre – thus the creation of the Theatres Royal. Cork got its Theatre Royal in 1760, Bath, in 1768, Liverpool, in 1772, and Margate, my hometown in 1787.

The Licensing Act of 1737 is also important as it allowed the British state to control and censor what was being said about the government on stage. Scripts had to be vetted by the Lord Chamberlain’s office before the first performance. Whilst the monopolies on the performance of “serious” plays were eventually revoked by the Theatres Act of 1843, censorship of stage plays continued until 1968.

I’m sure you, like me, would like to pretend that you’re shocked that the British Government censored the content of theatre for nearly 250 years. But from the movement of its inception MI5 vetted the majority of the BBCs staff. This was to ensure that people deemed too left-wing or anti-war were excluded from roles at the BBC. A practice that went on until at least the 1990’s I might add.

Indeed The British Board of Film Censors (later renamed British Board of Film Classification or BBFC) claims it was founded by the film industry. But its first director Joseph Wilkinson resigned his position as theatre script examiner to take up the position in 1913. 

Anyways that’s why towns and cities across the country have Theatre Royals.

What does happen when the Queen dies?

There is a plan. There’s been a plan since the 1960s. It’s called Operation London Bridge.

The Guardian’s described it as being “arcane and highly specific”, “planned to the minute”.

To give you a sense of scope it involves: the Church of England, the London Met, the Armed Forces, the Media, the Royal Parks, TFL, and more. 

The Prime Minister will be contacted via secure line. Issued the phrase “London Bridge is down”. The plan 60 years in its making will be set in motion. It will ripple outward from Number 10 though society.

Flags will be flown at half mast, the stock exchange closed for a day, the media – specifically the BBC, will go into 12 days of mourning. 

If you want to know more, Google it. It’s going to be totally mental.

Then of course there’ll be the biggest global media event in human history.

The state funeral.

What articles about ‘What Happens When the Queen Dies?‘ never cover, is everything else though. What happens in society? What happens to culture? 

I’ve thought about it. So as your self appointed royal realist correspondent I’m going to tell you what I think is going to happen.

It’s going to be awful.

If you think the weaponisation of petty culture war bullshit is bad. Or thought the coverage of Brexit, IndieRef or Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour party was bad. You ain’t seen nothing.

Tectonic plates that constitute British cultural identity are going to grind against one another. Usually, these realities co-exist, respectfully ignoring one another. But in the days and weeks after the Queen dies;

The reality field produced by the British State will come crashing into contact with the ‘State of Britain’. 

Prince Philip’s death in early 2021 was a glimpse of the consequences. 

The BBC’s coverage of that event was the most complained about event in British television history. The proles gave more shits about EastEnders and the MasterChef final being delayed than endless rolling coverage about the death of the Duke.

To which the BBC replied “the decisions made reflect the role the BBC plays as the national broadcaster during moments of national significance.”

Translated.

“We as members of the establishment will project the kind of reality and behaviour that we believe should be occurring onto the public realm.”

When The Queen dies, imagine this attitude but times a million. Hyping a deeply unpopular prince – now king. Constructing a national story. Imagine the think pieces! 😬.

Since the late 90’s, successive governments have tried to forge a British identity as a cultural project. Blair had Cool Britannia, Brown had British jobs for British workers. Cameron had strange British values essays, and since Britishness and Brexit have become tightly bound ideas.

The death of the Queen is going to challenge it all. Because the Queen for all my American listeners out there is not the Queen of England. She is, by the Grace of God, The Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of her other realms and territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, and Defender of the Faith.

Zooming out, the death of Elisabeth II will bookend the ‘End of Empire’. Had she been crowned just 5 years earlier, she would have been Empress of India.

The Queen is, to give her credit. The only head of state in recorded history to personally softland the break up of an Empire without widespread and prolonged violence. Her death closes the book on that soft landing and opens a new one on what happens next.

Much of Britain’s remaining geopolitical power (except for its Nukes) is tied up with The Crown as money handler for the global elite. See Episode 2120 for more detail on that. 

The Queen is currently the head of state of 16 countries or 12% of the world’s surface. Things however are changing. Barbados just elected its first president. As it becomes a republic it will remove the Crown as head of state. After her death others will follow. The only question is how many and how quickly

For the members of our establishment that grew up shagging flags and standing for the national anthem, the dissolution of the remaining British cultural superstructure is going to be as – if not more – traumatic than the Queen’s death.

The ‘non-statutory corporation sole’ known as The Crown and its entanglement with the state will continue as normal. The Queen is dead, long live The King as it were. As Charles immediately becomes King, it’ll be business as usual.

But for the establishment it’s going to be anything but. An abstract sense of cultural grief will saturate all discourse. 

As with geopolitical questions abroad, the same will happen at home. The integrity of the union is already in question. But how quickly, and when and who gets to say how soon is too soon will be central arguments.

Supercharged by Brexit, the crisis of British identity that will emerge immediately at the announcement of Operation London Bridge is going to be brutal. 

It should be a moment when the country grieves the loss of a Queen and finally processes Empire. A narrative break between the 20th Century and the 21st.

Instead I fear it’s going to be a period of deranged manufactured consent and statue discourse. Keep calm, and carry on amidst rising ​​fascism, supply chain crisis, empty shelves, channel drownings, rivers of shite, and rapid inflation.

When The Queen dies it’s going to be like ‘the Olympics, but for a funeral’.

Royal Grumble I

Ok ok, In an attempt to please a small but vocal segment of the audience. I’m going to talk about the royals. But we have a problem. 

I sat for an hour yesterday to write the draft script for today and accidentally wrote 2500 words. With no end in sight. 

This is why I mentioned in Episode 20-18 that this topic is more of an IRL thing. We both drink beer, I monologue, you listen.

So I’ve added a number to the show’s title. A slow burn mini series or something.

Anyways. Let’s begin with a disclaimer: I am not a royalist by any stretch of the imagination. Nor am I a staunch Republican. 

I am instead what I like to think of as a ‘Royal Realist’. 

What exactly is a ‘Royal Realist’? Well to miss appropriate Ronald Coase its about understanding ‘The Nature Of The Firm’.

Royalist realism is taking the Royal Family seriously as a political, cultural and geopolitical actor. I have plenty of friends who’ll say ‘The royal family doesn’t have any real power, they are just a tourist attraction. what’s the harm?’. 

To which I say. The Duchy of Cornwall AKA Prince Charles vetted laws to stop his tenants from having the right to buy their homes.

Now, did Prince Charles sit at his desk and read all the legislation in person or whatever? Probably not.

But these exemptions are made as part of the standard parliamentary process. Under a mechanism known as ‘Queen’s consent’. We know from reporting this year that The Queen or rather ‘the institution of The Crown’ has vetted more than 1,000 parliamentary bills during her reign.

The 1967 leasehold reform act includes exclusions that allow the Duchy of Cornwall to operate its holdings as an actual feudal estate.

The Crown is not a TV show but a ‘nonstatutory corporation sole’. 

Let me explain. 

There are two types of corporation in British Law. A Corporation Sole and a Corporation Aggregate. All the things that come to mind when you think about what corporations are, are the second kind. Companies made up of individual persons IE partners or directors in ‘aggregate’

“The Crown” is the former.

Corporations sole evolve from church law. Legal entities consisting of a single (“sole”) incorporated office, occupied by a single (“sole”) natural person. 

Simply put, the ‘office’ that controls the assets.

For example: when you become a Bishop you put on the Pectoral cross and along with it comes a legal jaeger. You are a bishop, but now control the office and assets of the bishop.

Whilst it has a complicated history; ‘The Crown’ goes back to William III. Essentially it ensures that when the sovereign dies, the sovereign never legally dies.

‘The Firms’ mission is to ensure the continuation of ‘The Crown’. 

Think for a moment about ‘The Crown Estate’. You know that thing that owns quite a bit of central London and are nightmare landlords. The entity that owns Virtually all of the UK’s seabed from mean low water mark out to 12-nautical-miles and approximately 55% of the UK’s foreshore

‘Oh’ I hear you say, but it has to give 75% of its profits to the government’. Sure. But The Crown Estate represents “the sovereign’s public estate”. Since 2011 the 25% that remains after the government takes its tithe is paid to the Monarch’s private estate.

In essence. What’s good for The Crown is good for The Government. An entity that has enormous power over all the naturally occurring gold and silver in the UK. Our shorelines, a lot of farmland and much more.

The Queen is its owner in so much as she’s the one wearing the crown and piloting the Mech.

Further afield let’s consider the Cayman islands. The City of London, The Crown and the UK Government’s primary role in the world (since the end of empire and rise of global finance capitalism) has been to operate the world’s tax havens. The Cayman Islands will stash anyone’s money as long as it has the bosses face on it. The boss of course being The Queen. And her face is on about one third of the world’s money.

The Cayman islands are a ‘Parliamentary dependency under a constitutional monarchy’. Locals have some democracy for local issues and elect a Premier every 4 years. A role that by the way was up until 2009 known as ‘Leader of Government Business’. Which isn’t a good role title if you’re in charge of a notorious tax haven.

The actual de facto head of state for the Cayman Islands is the Governor. Appointed by the monarch on the advice of the British government. Again what’s good for the government is what’s good for the Crown. 

In 2016 Jeremy Corbyn said that if elected prime minister he would impose direct orders on British overseas territories and crown dependencies to stop them acting as tax havens. 

This is an under discussed reason why the Establishment made it its mission to destroy the man by any means possible.

To close I’ll briefly gesture toward Prince Harry’s recent comments about what it’s like being in the royal family. 

In the next part we’ll consider what it must be like trapped inside the mechanisms of an institution that has not cared about anything other than itself since 1760.

Anything but the Election

Yesterday I was thinking that I would make an episode about the 2021 election results. I wanted to talk about the media class. Centrism, twitter brain worms, the left, the labour party, Keith Stamar and that epic galaxy brain thread from Dominic Cummings. 

It’s the sort of episode that would probably have done some good numbers. But it’s also a frustrating and really depressing topic. So I’m not going to do that. 

Instead, I’ll point you towards episode 19-37 – We Are Just At That Point In The Timeline made the day after the 2019 election defeat. And episode 20-01 – Outside Of London which is about the media class confusing national news for local news.

My good friend Alex urged me to do an episode about my quote unquote crazy Royals stuff earlier this week. “The world needs to hear it, it is too good for just me”. He said in response to me dropping the link to the first episode from The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s official youtube channel into the chat with the words ‘Told you so’.

I could talk about royal coverage in the British press, propaganda and the disintermediation of celebrity. How Katie Price operates as a “self-facilitating media node” and is very savvy about how her youtube channel creates a feedback loop with the traditional press. Though I’m not sure I could fit it all into 5mins of audio. This topic’s more natural setting is a one sided rant/conversation at you after a couple of beers.

But I will sum up the royals media strategy in 2021:

Maybe I’ll talk about how I’ve been reading a really good book. This is it’s full title by the way.

“The devils and evil spirits of Babylonia : being Babylonian and Assyrian incantations against the demons, ghouls, vampires, hobgoblins, ghosts, and kindred evil spirits, which attack mankind, tr. from the original Cuneiform texts, with transliterations, vocabulary, notes, etc” by Reginald Campbell 1903

The scan is on the internet archive and it’s fantastic. Or particular interest are the sections on Ancestor Worship and The Seven Evil Spirits. 

It’s really interesting to me how the binding of one or more of the 7 evil spirits is used mechanically in Babylonian ritual. 

Thes 7 Spirits are: 

[the first] is the South Wind . 
The second Is a dragon with mouth agape 
The third is a grim leopard 
The fourth is a terrible serpent …. 
The fifth is a furious beast (?)
The sixth is a rampant . . . something or other the text is missing
(but we do know that it’s against god and king.)
And the seventh is an evil windstorm 

The Seven Evil Spirits

It’s also worth noting in Sumerian reality there are also 7 separate   earthly demons. Products of the union of the sky god An and the earth (Uraš) in the Poem of Erra. There’s  also the 7 great gods of the Sumerian pantheon who reside in the Pleiades or the divine heptad.

There is I think an lot of room to think with each set of 7 in a flow model. Particularly when you see how the 7 spirits are called compare it to the content of the Lesser Key

Speaking of the Key of Solomon, because … reasons I’ve been totally sucked into the Ars Notoria.

Is there anyone in my audience who has any experience with it? If so please reach out. Because of the same reasons I’ve also been eyeing up Toronto universities 2015 edition of John of Morigny’s Liber Florum Celestis Doctrine or The Flowers of Heavenly Teaching. But it’s 185 quid. An excuse to visit the British Library I’ve ever heard one.

John of Morigny seems like an interesting chap. 

He became a monk about 1300ish and was so shocked by the content of the Ars Notoria he found in the monastery’s library that he immediately started practicing ritual magic and subsequently received a vision from the virgin Mary telling him to rewrite the whole thing. Which he did twice. After gaining the Virgin’s personal approval for its release he set up a correspondence course on the books material.

Liber Florum Celestis was then rewritten for a third time in 1315 in response to external criticism by certain unnamed “barking dogs” lol. As the book looked a bit too much like necromancy for some people. 

It apparently includes the Book of Figures where Morigny recounts his visions of the virgin Mary, his magical practice, his encounters with demons, his ultimate rejection of magic arts and the publication of the book under the Virgin’s protection.

I really didn’t know what to make an episode about today so instead I decided to write, record and edit it in one hour just like the old days. It’s been a pretty manic 30mins to be honest, and i’m going straight into recording with only a light edit so wish me luck.
