I would like to use this opportunity to ‘Direct Your Attention’ to three separate things this week:
1. I’M STARTING A ZINE! You can download it here:
http://startselectreset.com or http://www.thejaymo.net/zine/2. Trust Support’s ‘European Stack’ Residency [Berlin]
3. The Terraforming Post Grad @ Strelka [Moscow]
Quarterly zine; my gift to you ✉️
Start Select Reset Zine
Hello! This episode is actually coming to you from yesterday. As today Friday, I am away with some friends. I may possibly be drinking a cocktail, reading a book and hanging out by the pool as this goes live.
As such I would like to use this opportunity to ‘Direct your attention’ to three separate things this week.
Firstly. I would like to announce that I’m starting a new occasional project.
A zine called Start Select Reset. The first issue ‘Your attention is sovereign’ is out now.
You can find the first PDF at startselectreset.com or thejaymo.net/zine
This first PDF collates transcripts from shows I’ve done here as part of Permanently Moved. Subjects Include: the attention economy, social media, and device use. I hope you’ll download it and share it etc. You’ll also find a link in the show notes.
Doing this PDF thing is in part inspired in part by M1k3y Pryvts Research zines he’s put out on his website. (link in the show note) as I used to make and contributed to several zines in my teens and early 20’s. Part Dark Forest experiment in samizdat publishing. And also as a response to my friends that keep urging me too ‘publish more content’.
Through exposing my intellectual life weekly to the internet some themes have emerged as a recurring thread. I didn’t want to throw up a megapost on medium or whatever so i made this instead.
I will also use the project name Start select reset as a catch all for longer projects and interviews I’ve been wanting to make. I will still put out on the permanently moved but named as a separate series from 301. So stay subscribed for that.
Secondly.
The Berlin based space for platform design and utopian conspiracy Trust.Support have put out a call for applications for 5 research residencies desks at their co-working space on the subject of The European Stack.
From October through December 2019, Trust will explore narratives and projects that reimagine the European Stack as a political project. What is the way forward for pan-european digital infrastructure? Could the European Stack be a project about, and model for, a solidarity-based politics?
Trust dot support is interested in hearing from people working on economic science fictions, platform proposals and policy designs. The goal of the residency is to lay the groundwork for platforms and networks that distribute risk, rather than concentrating it at the most vulnerable edges.
Whilst the residency isn’t paid, you will get a full flex desk membership for the 3 months of their residency. This includes 24/7 access to a desk spot & access to all member-events and amenities.
Help from the trust team and wider co-conspirator network to assist with your work
With a view to at a minimum output of 1 video and 1 text under a creative commons license at the end of the residency.
If you are in EU based and can support your self in berlin i definitly recoment it.
Thirdly,
Ben Bratton and Strelka Moscow have recently announced ‘The Terraforming’. A new post grad program beginning in 2020. A hilight from their website:
The research programme will consider the past and future role of cities as a planetary network by which humans occupy the Earth’s surface.
It continues
What kind of urbanism will the programme propose? An urbanism that is pro-planning, pro-artificial, anti-collapse, pro-universalist, anti-anti-totality, pro-materialist, anti-anti-leviathan, and anti-mythology and pro-egalitarian distribution. It starts with a different set of assumptions: the planet is artificially sentient; climate collapse mitigation and pervasive automation can converge; the concept of ‘climate change’ is an epistemological accomplishment of planetary-scale computation; automation is a general principle by which ecosystems work; necessary fundamental shifts in geotechnology are likely to precede necessary fundamental shifts in geopolitics; ‘surveillance’ of carbon flows is a good thing; energy infrastructures based on long term waste cycles are desirable; for ecological carrying capacity ‘culture’ costs more than science; planetarity requires philosophy in and of outer space; speculative design must focus on what is so deeply functional as to be unlikely; and that, finally, the future becomes something to be prevented as much as achieved.
If this floats your boat you can apply at https://theterraforming.strelka.com/
Oh boy would I like to apply this is right up my Land As Platform street. But unfortunately, this years session is totally unworkable for me as it begins early 2020. I am however committed to finishing the first draft of Land As Platform by the end of the year. So perhaps I can release bits of it on the URL as i’m doing the editing in the new year.
Subscribing to SSRZ supports my online work and creative projects.
As a thank you, I send you my zine four times a year, just like it’s 1994.
