Issue #013 – Symbol Dump

Issue #013 of SSRZ is about a font and the woman who helped designed it.

The issue’s full-page spread features a collection of jankily rendered symbols used by the K-pop fandom on Tumblr, gathered by me throughout March 2025.

This was a fun zine to make. I learnt a lot about handling Unicode symbols and working with an ancient font from the 1990s that doesn’t play all that nicely with modern design and layout tools.

One unexpected side effect of making this zine in Arial was the sudden resurfacing of long suppressed teenage homework trauma and memories of Microsoft Office 97.

I didn’t take many ‘in progress’ shots while making this issue. Everything starts to look the same from one zine to the next lol. So, for this release post, you’ll just have to imagine what it looked like. I was so deep in the cut/fold/refold/envelope/stamp routine that I got halfway through before realising I hadn’t even taken a glamour stack photo!

SMALL PRESS?

Family Of Giants Logo - three white minimalist fir trees silhouetted against a black background.

I’m incredibly grateful to all of you who’ve subscribed to this little project. The mailing list keeps growing, and the number of 301 episodes of Permanently Moved left to make until the ‘new thing’ begins shrinks week by week.

As I’ve said several times, that new thing will be longer episodes of Permanently Moved, each accompanied by a print zine. The liner notes that complete the work. I’m excited to explore more offline/online hybrid projects in this upcoming era.

Since I started making Start Select Reset Zine, the cost of shipping has gone a bit mad! It’s beginning to make more sense to send subscribers more zine for the same money. Which is exactly what I’m planning to do once the full run of 301 ends.

And with that being the case… maybe I should start a small press? A label? One that houses not just my own zine and my band’s music, but maybe friends’ creative work too? DIY, punk style. A kite mark. A logo.

In the meantime, I still need a few more subscribers to justify buying an office-core laser printer. Once I’ve got it, production will be much simpler and more streamlined. Please do consider becoming a subscriber!

Subscribing to SSRZ supports my online work and creative projects.

As a thank you, I send you my zine four times a year, just like it’s 1994.
