Into July

Every once in a while, I feel compelled to write a post that goes something like, “OMG; it’s X month already?!” This is one such time.

Into July

I didn’t post my weeknotes last night because I didn’t know what to write here up the top. But I realise I don’t need to write anything really, but in all honesty, the only thing that comes to mind is this:

Every once in a while, I feel compelled to write a post that goes something like, “OMG; it’s X month already?!” This is one such time.

In other news, if anyone is in Brighton for Develop this week, on Thursday (10th) I’ll be showing off the onchain parser based interactive fiction engine I’ve been working on at Loading Bar from 6pm. And i’ll be speaking a little on whats next – Local Wasm LLM harness etc

Lots of other friends showing of their work too!

On The Blog:

Nothing on the blog this week here. But A Hundred Notes on Storydwelling also continues to unfold over on my leaflet pub. Such a fun, lightweight blogging platform with deep Bluesky integration.

But more importantly, as you’ll can see below, I did this week finally put out a new interview on Experience.Computer! I also sent 8 invitations out to people during the week, so with 301 just 3 short episodes away from its project completion. I’m working on E.C, my zine, and whats coming next for permanently moved. Evenings are busy!

Permanently Moved

Itโ€™s Beginning to Feel a Bit Like The Future

301 permanently moved podcast cover - Text: 301 Permanently Moved. The background is a hazy, teal-colored futuristic city with floating oval-shaped pods.

We must attempt to reclaim some proximity to the future. We have to stop strip-mining yesterday and act as though the future is already here.

Terminal Access

Archetype.fund published this interview with Mat Dryhurst. Its a really good summary and conversation around the last 15 years of his work with Holly. Pragmatic and principled. I particularly like this quote:

But our position was: Itโ€™s ridiculous for us to go on Instagram as musicians or conceptual artists and be invited to take pictures of ourselves all day to seduce somebody into liking us in the hope they might engage with a book we write. That is a debased understanding of culture. We were very hardline on this. Of course we participate, because you have to, but I hate it. So if you’re telling me that the ability to quickly automate media to meet an algorithmic goal will be overwhelmed by automated media and characters cynically creating slopโ€”slop originally being YouTube clickbait. If AI is going to overwhelm our current valuation mechanisms and cultural incentives: bring it on. I love that idea

Dipping the Stacks

Should Ethiopian philosophy be universalist or Africanist? | Aeon Essays

Itโ€™s an important feature that many of the discussions and debates about Ethiopian philosophy are led by anthropologists. I take this development with a grain of salt. Because of the nature of anthropology, there is a danger in elevating each and every worldview and system of belief into the status of โ€˜philosophyโ€™: we could lose sight of what it is that makes some forms of enquiry uniquely philosophical.

Why Do Dads Watch TV Standing Up?

A substantial subset of Standing Dads are the Noncommittal Dads. These are the dads who are always lurking in the doorway or other transitional space, feet shoulder-width apart like tennis players, arms crossed like bodyguards. They always seem (and present themselves as being) on the verge of leaving the room. Noncommittal Dads refuse to admit that theyโ€™re watching the thing thatโ€™s on television, despite remaining completely still and engaged by the screen

God is hungry for Context: First thoughts on o3 pro

One thing I noticed from early access: if you donโ€™t give it enough context, it does tend to overthink. Itโ€™s insanely good at analyzing, amazing at using tools to do things, not so good at doing things directly itself. I think it would be a fantastic orchestrator. But, for example, there were some ClickHouse SQL questions that o3 did better with. YMMV!

The Horizon of Your Concern

Instead we need to understand personal climate strategies as evolving tools. We should make critical decisions before we lose the option to make them, but also be aware that there are no permanent solutions in an era of ongoing large-scale transformations. Weโ€™re planning with imperfect information, and each person or family has different needs and constraints.

A New Political Compass | NOEMA

While the Down-wing embraces the complex systems side of Life, the Up-wing privileges its information processing dimension. If the Down-wing favors a tragic ethos of wise self-limitation in service of Life, the Up-wing envisions a heroic future broadened by Lifeโ€™s limitless expansion.

Reading

Continuing with my ‘back on my bullshit’ not finishing the books. I started and then smashed though the audiobook of the Warhammer 40k book Rynn’s World by Steve Parker at some ridiculous 2x speed whilst going backwards and forwards into town. Great book. Covers a legendary piece of Imeprial Fists lore.

I also started reading Practice of the Presence: A Revolutionary Translation by Carmen Acevedo Butcher originally written in Paris by the 17th-century Carmelite friar Brother Lawrence who fought in the 30 years war. I read it on archive.org during the pandemic, but this translation is something else. Brings the text alive in such an accessible way!

Ethel Cain – Fuck Me Eyes (single)

New Ethel Cain has a new single out. After the wall of noise that was the Perverts EP Cain is back on familiar sonic territory with reverb drenched vocals over a synth-washed soundcape.

Thematically Cain is back to familiar ground, the song is about reputation, personal agency, and high school. Album’s out in a month. Can’t wait.
